Suli është një krahinë Çamerisë(Epiri). Në shëkullin të 17, u banua, nga Shqiptarë, dhe u bë i famshëm nga luftëtaret Suliotë si Marko Boçari. Propaganda greke thot që Suli & Suliotët janë Grekë!

Suli is an area in Chameria(Epirus). In the 17th century it was inhabited by Albanians, and became famous by the war-virtues of the Suliot chieftains, such as Marko Bocari.
Greek propaganda, tries to "hellenize" Suli and the Suliots.

Epirus, now called Albania, is situated on the north-west part of Greece, and extends along the eastern shores of the Adriatic. Macedonia bounded it on the east, and Aetolia and the Ionian Sea on the south. Albania is a wild and rugged country, very elevated, of a cold temperature, presenting few plains, but abounding in excellent pasture : its lakes are embedded in mountains, covered with oaks as ancient as the world. Albania may be considered as an epitome of every climate, as a miniature of the severe regions of the Alps. It extends along the sea-coast for about forty-five leagues, from the Acroceraunian mountains, to the gulf of Ambracia, the modern Arta.

Epirus, from this time, shared the fortunes of the Roman empire, till it was conquered by the Turks, under Amurath II, in 1432. Castriot (Scanderbeg, q. v.), the last of the royal family in Epirus, and educated at the Ottoman court, threw off the Turkish yoke; but, after his death, his country was again conquered by Mahomet II, 1466. It is principally inhabited by Arnauts.

CHAPTER IX.

TRADE OF ALBANIA.

The trade of this extensive section of European Turkey is chiefly important as regards the intercourse between its ports and the Ionian Islands, and the trade between Scutari and the ports of Venice, and Trieste. The ports of Prevesa, Durazzo, and Scutari, might become important, if any great practical improvement in agriculture or trade were made. Under the existing government we do not expect any favourable progress. Albania, including ancient Epirus, possesses a climate and soils capable of producing valuable crops of corn, hemp, vines, currants, and various other fruits and productions.

The people generally known in Europe by the name of Albanians, by the Turks called Arnauts, and by themselves Skipetares, which means in their language " mountaineers" or " dwellers on rocks," inhabit the greater part of the ancient Illyricum and Epirus. They are a hardy and warlike people, and pay only a nominal obedience to the Ottoman Porte. They have a peculiar language, and constitute, as we have observed, a particular race, which is very distinct from the Slavonian inhabitants of the country which borders on them towards the north, as well as from their Turkish and Greek neighbours, and they are now generally supposed to be the descendants of the ancient Illyrians and Epirots.The eastern coast of the Adriatic, from the gulf of Drino to the bay of Arta, is the extent of proper Albania from north to south ; but the Albanian people are spread much further. They reach not only over all Epirus, but through the northern provinces of Greece, Thessaly, Aetolia, Boeotia, and Attica, and are found in many of the Grecian islands; likewise in Romelia, Servia, and to the very gates of Constantinople. There are also very considerable colonies of the Albanian race on the coast of Calabria and in Sicily, whither they have fled from the arms of the Turks.

Proud of his profession, the Albanian soldier shows with ostentation the scars with which he is covered. He makes a great parade of the raggedness of his clothes and his linen : to express that an Albanian is brave and intrepid,, they say that he never quits his shirt till it falls away in rags. If this be well as a votary of Mars, I do not think it very recomrnendable as a votary of Hygeia; at least the custom, if not injurious to a rude Arnaout, would not, I think, be very salutary to a civilized European. We still see in the attitudes and manners of the people of Epirus the soldiers of Alexander, of Pyrrhus, and of Scanderbeg. With such men, well disciplined, a commander of genius might effect wonders, and change the whole face of the East.

The lower Albania or the ancient Epirus lies to the south of the fortieth parallel ; we shall consider it on that account as a distinct region; its climate is colder than that of Greece, the spring does not set in before the middle of March, and the heat of summer is oppressive in July and August; in these months many streams and rivers are drained, the grass and plants are withered. The vintage begins in September, and the heavy rains during December are succeeded in January by some days of frosty weather.
